Hovan, originally a Yiddish name means "gift of God" or "merciful". A derivative of Hovannes (John) because some of the ornaments used in this piece can be found on a khatchkar (cross stone) in Hovanavank monastery. One large engraved text high on the northern wall of one of the monastery’s auxiliary structures reads: "...By the grace of merciful God, during the reign of Queen Tamar, in the year 642 (1200 AD).
