Varagavank is one of the most important monastery in Armenian history. Located in present Turkey, the first church of Varagavank was built in the 7th century, and was developed further until the 20th century. During the Armenian genocide some 3,000 survivors of the massacres found refuge in this monastery, and self-defence units were created. Thank God the majority of the survivors managed to escape to Van. Varak is the name of this piece’s owner's son.
